The method

Follow the Interest.

Follow the Interest is the WSA method in which a child's genuine fascination becomes the starting point for serious, interdisciplinary knowledge rather than the theme of a single activity.

Why it matters

An interest does not end when an activity ends.

Follow the Interest lets one fascination open into substantial knowledge. It is the entry mechanism of the whole system. Nothing in WSA begins with a subject; everything begins with something a particular child cannot stop looking at.There is always a deeper version of the question, and the child's curiosity gives the pathway its direction.

An interest followed becomes an Interest Pathway. The pathway travels through the ten Worlds, and the Atelier Path is the personal route one child actually takes through it.

The mechanism

What actually happens, step by step.

Not a slogan. A repeatable sequence that an adult with no teaching background can run.

  1. 01

A child returns to something without being asked. That is the signal, and it is the only starting condition WSA requires.

  2. 02

The interest is treated as a doorway rather than a topic. The question is not what activity fits it, but which fields of knowledge it genuinely opens.

  3. 03

An Exploration is set: something puzzling, a prediction to commit to, a test that can settle it.

  4. 04

The result is usually not what was predicted. That gap is where the knowledge enters, and it is the reason the method works.

  5. 05

The work crosses into a second World, because real questions do not respect disciplinary borders.

  6. 06

Evidence is recorded — what the child said, built, measured or changed their mind about.

  7. 07

The same interest is met again later at a harder register. Repetition becomes advancement rather than revision.

Worked example

A child who loves cars.

The interest is cars. The education is everything the interest can open.

  • Cars
  • Wheels and axles
  • Friction and momentum
  • Gears and ratio
  • Materials and strength
  • Combustion and electricity
  • Design and aerodynamics
  • Manufacturing and supply chains
  • Economics of ownership
  • Cities, roads and land use
  • Emissions, batteries and sustainability
  • Autonomy and machine decision-making

0–3

Rolling. What moves, what stops, what happens at the edge of the table. The whole of momentum is present here, unnamed.

3–7

Ramps, and the first genuine experiment: predict which car wins, then find out you were wrong and work out why. Counting, measuring, comparing, recording.

7–12

Gears, friction as a quantity, weight distribution, drag. Building things that fail and diagnosing why. The first real engineering vocabulary, earned rather than issued.

12–18

Thermodynamics and electrochemistry. The economics of a factory. Lithium, cobalt and the geography of extraction. Whether an autonomous vehicle should protect its passenger or the pedestrian.

The point is not that a four-year-old is doing thermodynamics. It is that the same interest can deepen over time, with each question creating a meaningful next direction. Follow the Cars Journey.
