The model

What is The World School Atelier?

The World School Atelier is a rigorous, interest-led education system that builds academic knowledge, future capabilities and real-world understanding around a child's genuine interests. Rather than organising learning primarily by subjects, WSA allows an interest to become a pathway through interconnected Worlds of knowledge, with progression, depth and mastery built into the experience.

In short

An education system, not a library of activities.

The World School Atelier — WSA — is an education system for children from birth to eighteen. It is not a curriculum delivered by subject, not a collection of printable activities, and not a travel programme. It is an architecture: a way of turning what a child is genuinely fascinated by into serious, sequenced, interdisciplinary knowledge.

The premise is simple and unusually consequential. A child will tolerate difficulty in pursuit of something they care about that they will not tolerate in pursuit of a timetable. So WSA lets the child choose the doorway, and takes responsibility for making sure the room behind it is substantial.

Underneath sits a permanent structure of ten Worlds, each a genuine field of knowledge with a full 0–18 progression. Because the Worlds never change, work done at four and work done at fourteen accumulate into one coherent education rather than a scrapbook of topics.

The architecture

How the parts fit together.

The whole model follows one continuous sequence, from fascination to lasting capability.

Who it is for

Families building a serious, expansive education around a child.

WSA is for families educating beyond a predetermined path — at home, while travelling, through extended worldschooling, or across several places. It provides the intellectual architecture while preserving the child's fascination as the doorway.

It assumes an involved adult. It does not assume a teaching background, because the thinking — the sequence, the questions, the progression, the evidence — has already been done.

The method

Follow the Interest.

A child's fascination is not a theme to be exhausted in a week. It is an opening into serious knowledge, and it does not end when an activity ends.

A child interested in cars is not handed a cars activity. The interest opens into mechanics, materials, physics, mathematics, design, geography, history, economics, entrepreneurship, sustainability and artificial intelligence — each entered at the register that child can genuinely think in, and re-entered years later at greater difficulty.

That is the difference between a theme of the week and a pathway. Follow the Interest is explained in full here.

The knowledge architecture

The ten Worlds.

Permanent fields of knowledge, each with real disciplines underneath, a 0–18 progression, and connections to the other nine. They are not themes and they do not rotate.

Academic knowledge

Rigour without rigidity.

The route through knowledge belongs to the child. The standard does not.

Every World carries a long progression. Age guides presentation and safety; what a child understands and can do shapes what comes next. A child can explain, apply, create, solve and work independently at different levels in different areas.

WSA develops knowledge — what a child understands — alongside capability: what they can do with what they know. Development can also be observed in how they think, relate, create, adapt and act independently. Where a family needs a formal crosswalk to Cambridge, IB, AP, CAPS, IEB or Pearson, WSA provides one. Future capabilities

Knowledge, capability and application, developed together.

Twelve capabilities, developed through real work rather than taught as a separate course — and never offered instead of academic knowledge.

The world

How worldschooling fits.

WSA gives place-based learning a coherent 0–18 structure, whether a family travels or stays at home.

The Atlas reads real places — currently Tuscany, Kyoto, and the High Atlas and Marrakech — through the same ten Worlds as everything else. Fieldwork is written so it can be done in the place or adapted for anywhere: a street read for its history, a market for its supply chains, a puddle for its ecology.

A family in Florence and a family at a kitchen table in Johannesburg follow the same intellectual structure and record the same kind of evidence. Travel supplies primary sources. It does not change the standard.

Progression

How a child actually moves forward.

Work takes the form of Explorations: investigations built around something genuinely puzzling, with a prediction to make, a test to run, and a result that often overturns the prediction. What the child does is saved in their Passport with reflections and photographs, tagged to Worlds and capabilities.

Over time this produces a record of demonstrated ability rather than a list of completed activities — and it shows the difference between what a child has been exposed to and what they can actually do.
