A World

The Making World

Why does it hold, why did it fail, and could it be made better?

What this World is

Why it is worth a childhood's attention.

Engineering is the discipline of deciding under constraint. It is also the fastest route to genuine mathematics, because the number has to be right or the thing falls over.

The Making World is one of ten permanent Worlds in the WSA knowledge architecture. It is not a theme and it does not rotate. Any interest that genuinely opens onto the questions below enters here, and keeps entering here, at increasing difficulty, for as long as the child stays interested.

Knowledge

The disciplines underneath.

  • Structural engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Materials science
  • Architecture
  • Product design

Traditional school subjects this World covers

  • Physics
  • Design and technology
  • Engineering
  • Technical drawing

Capabilities

What this World develops most strongly.

  • Problem solving
  • Creative thinking
  • Adaptability

The questions

What this World keeps open.

  • What is holding this up, and what is it holding up against?
  • Why this material and not a cheaper one?
  • What would make this fail, and how long would that take?
  • Who pays for the thing after it is finished?

Progression

How this World is met from birth to eighteen.

Age is a signal, never the determinant. Each band describes an intellectual character, and what would genuinely demonstrate it.

0–3

Stack, topple, repeat.

Knowledge

  • Heavy and light
  • Balance

Skills

  • Builds and rebuilds

What demonstrates it

Changes the base after a collapse.

3–5

Shape and stability.

Knowledge

  • Wide bases stand

Skills

  • Builds something that survives a nudge

What demonstrates it

Explains why the second attempt stood.

5–7

Testing shapes.

Knowledge

  • Triangles hold
  • Folding stiffens

Skills

  • Compares two shapes under one load

What demonstrates it

A measured comparison of two structures.

7–9

Push and pull.

Knowledge

  • Compression and tension
  • Load paths

Skills

  • Marks forces on a drawing

What demonstrates it

Correctly identifies tension and compression in their own build.

9–11

Pressure and mechanism.

Knowledge

  • Force over area
  • Levers, gears, pulleys

Skills

  • Calculates pressure and mechanical advantage

What demonstrates it

A redesign that reduces pressure, proved arithmetically.

11–13

Material properties.

Knowledge

  • Strength, stiffness, toughness
  • Fatigue

Skills

  • Selects material on stated properties

What demonstrates it

A material choice justified against a rejected alternative.

13–15

Stress and specification.

Knowledge

  • Moments
  • Factor of safety
  • Tolerance

Skills

  • Designs to a written specification

What demonstrates it

A tested prototype with calculations and a revision log.

15–16

Manufacture and constraint.

Knowledge

  • Process shapes design
  • Cost modelling

Skills

  • Costs a design and iterates

What demonstrates it

A design revised because manufacture, not physics, forbade the first version.

16–18

Engineering judgement.

Knowledge

  • Failure analysis
  • Lifecycle and embodied carbon
  • Standards

Skills

  • Conducts a failure analysis

What demonstrates it

A defended design including how it will end its life.

Afterwards

Where this World goes beyond school.

  • Civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Architecture
  • Materials science
  • Industrial design
  • Robotics

Qualification crosswalk

How this maps to external frameworks.

A mapping, never a claim. WSA does not award, accredit or guarantee admission to anything.
