A World

The Natural World

How does the living and physical world actually work, and how do we find out?

What this World is

Why it is worth a childhood's attention.

Science is not a body of facts to be received but a method for settling disagreements with evidence. A child who has done real inquiry treats claims differently for life.

The Natural World is one of ten permanent Worlds in the WSA knowledge architecture. It is not a theme and it does not rotate. Any interest that genuinely opens onto the questions below enters here, and keeps entering here, at increasing difficulty, for as long as the child stays interested.

Knowledge

The disciplines underneath.

  • Biology
  • Ecology
  • Geology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth science
  • Climate science

Traditional school subjects this World covers

  • Science
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Environmental science
  • Geography (physical)

Capabilities

What this World develops most strongly.

  • Curiosity
  • Critical thinking
  • Systems thinking

The questions

What this World keeps open.

  • What is this made of, and how would we find out?
  • What would happen to everything else if this species disappeared?
  • How do we know the climate is changing rather than merely varying?
  • What is the difference between a pattern and a cause?

Progression

How this World is met from birth to eighteen.

Age is a signal, never the determinant. Each band describes an intellectual character, and what would genuinely demonstrate it.

0–3

The world through the hands.

Knowledge

  • Wet, dry, cold, rough

Skills

  • Handles and returns to natural material

What demonstrates it

Returns repeatedly to one natural material with attention.

3–5

Naming and noticing.

Knowledge

  • Living and non-living
  • Seasons

Skills

  • Sorts and names

What demonstrates it

Sorts by a rule the child chose and can state.

5–7

Prediction.

Knowledge

  • Life cycles
  • Materials change state

Skills

  • Predicts before testing

What demonstrates it

Reports a result that disagreed with their prediction.

7–9

Fair tests.

Knowledge

  • Variables
  • Habitats and food chains

Skills

  • Designs a fair test

What demonstrates it

Identifies the flaw in an unfair test.

9–11

Measurement and pattern.

Knowledge

  • Energy transfer
  • Adaptation
  • Rock cycle

Skills

  • Records quantitative data over time

What demonstrates it

A dataset the child gathered showing a pattern they can explain.

11–13

Method proper.

Knowledge

  • Cells
  • Particle model
  • Plate tectonics

Skills

  • Controls variables and repeats

What demonstrates it

A write-up with method, data, anomalies and a conclusion.

13–15

Quantitative science.

Knowledge

  • Reaction and equation
  • Genetics
  • Energy and power

Skills

  • Reports uncertainty
  • Uses correct units throughout

What demonstrates it

An investigation whose uncertainty is quantified, not gestured at.

15–16

Method critique.

Knowledge

  • Sampling
  • Confounding
  • Replication

Skills

  • Critiques a published method

What demonstrates it

A named confound identified in a real study, with its likely effect.

16–18

Independent investigation.

Knowledge

  • Modelling
  • Statistical inference
  • Research ethics

Skills

  • Designs, executes and defends original work

What demonstrates it

An investigation with a genuine result and a limitations section a scientist would accept.

Afterwards

Where this World goes beyond school.

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth sciences
  • Environmental science
  • Medicine
  • Veterinary science
  • Climate science

Qualification crosswalk

How this maps to external frameworks.

A mapping, never a claim. WSA does not award, accredit or guarantee admission to anything.

Cambridge InternationalBiology / Chemistry / Physics / Environmental Management · IGCSE → AS & A LevelSupports preparation

Practical skills, variables and quantitative analysis are directly relevant; assessment requires a registered centre.

International BaccalaureateEnvironmental Systems and Societies / Biology / Chemistry · DPConceptually aligned

The internal assessment investigation is close in form to WSA independent inquiry.

Advanced PlacementAP Biology / AP Environmental Science · APConceptually aligned

Science practices in the course frameworks match the inquiry progression.

CAPS (South Africa)Natural Sciences / Life Sciences · Senior Phase → FETRelated

Topic overlap is substantial; NSC assessment requires an approved route.
